Fran's Shave for Cancer
Story
Hello! My name is Fran Hughes, mother of 2 daughters, wife to a wonderful supportive husband.
10 years ago my mother-in-law was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and passed away 12 days thereafter at the age of 56. Not only did my husband lose a loving mother, but it deprived my children of their Nan.
Cancer in any form is devastating. Ovarian Cancer however is deadly, with only a low survival rate. There is no form of early detection at this stage, with symptoms of bloating, cramps and abdominal pain being part of any women’s everyday life. By the time this cancer is diagnosed, it may have spread to the pelvic region, making it even more difficult to treat.
The number of women being diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer increases each year. At least 15% of ovarian cancers are thought to be the result of inheriting a faulty gene through your family history, therefore it may be hereditary.
I have 2 beautiful daughters, who have lost their Nana, Auntie and Great-grandmother to Cancer.
Last year, I was awarded the Julie Webb-Mole Memorial Award for Female Financial Adviser of the Year. Julie was passionate about helping others in her role as an adviser. Sadly she lost her battle with cancer and passed away in 1995. In honor of Julie and to continue her legacy, I have pledged to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Australia so that they may continue to bring awareness of this Cancer to grandmothers, mothers, daughters, and sisters.
With the support of the Count Charitable Foundation and the CEO of Count Financial Ltd, I will shave my hair in April 2013 at the Count Annual Conference. The hair will be donated to the Cancer Council, who will make beautiful wigs for cancer patients.
No words can express the gratitude I have to all who have supported the cause and donated so far.
A BIG heartfelt THANK YOU!
I started out with the goal of raising $10,000, but with Count Charitable Foundation matching every cent from hereon, I strongly believe $20,000 is within our reach.
